SOUTH BEND -Elaine R. (Hoag) Newton, 79, of
Southeast Drive, died at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, in Hospice
House. Elaine R. Newton was born to George and Grace Watson in
Muskegon, Mich., but lived her early years in Frankfort, Mich.
She was a graduate of Central Michigan University and did
graduate work at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
She retired after 30 years of teaching from
the South Bend Community School Corporation, having taught at
Muessel Elementary, Brown Middle and Adams High School. She was a
lifetime member of the Twyckenham Hills Community Club and was a
charter member of the Broadway Theater League.
Active in duplicate bridge, she was a member
of the South Bend Bridge, Center Duplicate Bridge, and was a past
president and board member of Mish-A-Bend Bridge. She was past
president and assistant treasurer of the St. Joe Valley Bridge
Association. That group awarded her the John Vargo Memorial Award
for Service to the Bridge Community. She was a Life Master of the
American Contract Bridge League.
She was preceded in death by her parents,
and by two older sisters, Georgia Spamer and Maye Gilroy. She
leaves to mourn her daughter, Kathy Elliot of South Bend; a
sister and brother-in-law, Nadine and Pete Panos of Las Cruces,
N.M.; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and burial will be
in the Watson family plot, Gilmore Cemetery, Elberta, Mich.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today, Dec. 5, at the
Welsheimer Funeral Home. Donations may be made to the Women's
Shelter of the YWCA, or to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111
