SOUTH BEND - Paul J. Newman, 61, of South Bend, went home
to meet his Lord on Tuesday morning, August 26, 2008. He was born
in New York City, NY, on December 10, 1946, and was adopted by
Florence and Alexander Newman of Weehawken, New Jersey, who have
preceded him in death. Paul came to South Bend to attend the
University of Notre Dame. He received his Bachelor of Arts in
1969 and his Juris Doctor Degree in 1974. He served in the United
States Army from 1969-1971. The South Bend area adopted and
welcomed Paul as he practiced law privately and as a St. Joseph
County Public Defender from 1975-1996. Resigning from his law
practice in 1996, he began working with students at the Family
and Children's Center. In 1998 he began working for St. Joseph
Community Corrections and also teaching Criminal Justice at
Tri-State University. Paul had brought his love for theatre and
music with him to South Bend and was an active member and board
member of a local theatrical group called "The
Company." Paul leaves behind Mildred (Mom) Steeley of
South Bend and Lisa Richards of Mishawaka, along with
numerous other friends.
Services will be held in Bubb's Funeral Home in Mishawaka today, August 28, 2008, with visitation from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and a service at 7 p.m. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka, IN. Please make donations in memory of Paul to the Notre Dame Law School, to the General Fellowship Fund, or to the Hospice House-Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, South Bend.
