Mrs. Gracie Newhouse, 81, beloved
mother, grandmother and sister who resided on North Hill Street,
South Bend, Ind., passed away at 7:11 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24, in
the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, following an illness of
one year. Mrs. Newhouse was born in Trenton, Tenn., on Oct. 11,
1919, to the union of the late Walter and Fannie (James) Jones.
She had resided in South Bend for the past 50 years, coming from
Toledo, Ohio.
In Sodus, Mich., she was united in wedlock
to R.J. Newhouse on May 29, 1939. Mr. Newhouse preceded her in
death on Oct. 8, 1994. She was also preceded in death by a
daughter, Mary E. Williams; and by two sons, Don B.
Newhouse and Leroy Newhouse.
She retired from Ziker Cleaners after 35
years of employment, and was also a charter member of Mt. Carmel
Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Missionary
Society, Mothers Board and Kitchen Committee, and was also a past
choir supervisor. Loving family members who survive include a
daughter, Sharon Shearer of South Bend; two sons, Jerry
(Joann) Newhouse of South Bend and Ronald (Jeanette) Newhouse of
Mishawaka, Ind.; 27 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and 15
great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Ellis of South
Bend; and two sisters-in-law, Robin Newhouse (widow of Don) and
Lenora Newhouse (widow of Leroy) of South Bend; along with other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on
Wednesday, Nov. 29, in Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church.
Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call
from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening in Alford's Mortuary where
arrangements have been entrusted.
