GRANGER - Dr. Stephen L. Nelson, 65, of Granger, IN, passed away
January 29, 2010. He was born October 3, 1944, to the late
Natalie (Walters) and J. Gordon Nelson. On June 27, 1970, he
married Connie Townsend from Princeton, IN. She survives with
daughter, Stephanie (Chris) Scalise of Osceola, IN; son, Brett
(Kathryn) Nelson of Lyons, CO; two grandchildren, Jack and Brady
Scalise; sister, Brenda (Ron) McHenry of Pleasant Plains, OH; and
brother, John Eric (Brenda) Nelson of Pensacola, FL. Dr. Nelson
served as a dentist for eight years of active duty in the U.S.
Navy after graduating from Indiana University Dental School in
1970. In 1978 he returned to his hometown of South Bend and
practiced dentistry for 27 years. He was an active member of
Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and the
Knollwood Country Club. He volunteered at the Children's
Dispensary for 15 years. He enjoyed traveling, skiing, tennis,
golf and racquetball. Friends may visit with Stephen's family
from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 6th, in Sunnyside
Presbyterian Church, 115 S. Frances St., South Bend. Rev. James
B. Miller will officiate a private memorial service for family
and Wednesday's Lunch Group after visitation. A private burial
service will be held in Princeton, IN, at a later date. In lieu
of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for
Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN
46637; or to the charity of the donor's choice. Welsheimer Family
Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
