MISHAWAKA - Axel I. Nelson, 84, of Burlington Court, died at 6:45 p.m. Monday in Memorial Hospital after an illness. Mr. Nelson was employed by South Bend Community School Corp. with 22 years of service as a painter and contractor. He was born July 15, 1910, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident.

On Oct. 7, 1935, in Sissiton, N.D., he married Hilma A. Anderson. She died Jan. 31, 1994. He is survived by a daughter, Jeanine Becker of South Bend; two sons, Charles of Mishawaka and Donald of South Bend; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Marie McKillop and Elsie Weinberg, both of Tampa, Fla., Veda Rubish of Seattle and Anna Oshinski of South Bend; and a brother, Paul of California. He was a member of Evangelical Covenant Church, South Bend.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the church. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
