Doris Jean Nash, 71, of Torch Court,
South Bend, Ind., passed away after a lengthy illness at 10:50
p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9, in her home. Doris, known to family
and friends simply as the "Red" for her beautiful
auburn hair, was born on Feb. 21, 1928, as the daughter of
Richard and Mattie Paris in Florence, Ala. She graduated
early from the Florence High School in 1944 to move to Memphis,
Tenn., where she worked in the Redstone Arsenal producing
amphibious craft for the war effort.
On June 2, 1951, in South Bend, she married
Neal Nash, her devoted husband, who survives. From 1961 to 1978
she served as the hostess for the popular Eddie's Restaurant, and
later retired from the Burger Dairy in 1993. Her primary concern
was as a wife, homemaker and mother to her two daughters, J. Lynn
(Mrs. Charles) Spiher of South Bend and Ann-Carol Nash of
South Bend; a son, David (Sharon) Nash of Leesburg, Ind. She is
also survived by a brother, Henry (Loretta) Paris of Florence,
Ala.; and a half sister, Inez Hunt of Tuscumbia, Ala.; a
son-in-law, Stephen Simons, M.D.; five grandchildren,
Jennifer L. Firtl of South Bend, David Z. Kil of
South Bend, Anna Christine Simons and Sara Margaret Simons of
Granger, Ind., and Kara (Rory) Pascale; one great-
grandson, Zachary Pascale of Leesburg; and by several nieces and
nephews. Doris was a longtime member of the University Club of
Notre Dame, and attended the Prince of Peace Church of the
Brethren. She will long be remembered for her ability to make the
perfect pie crust and her incisive view of the human spirit.
Friends may call on the family from 2 to 6
p.m. on Saturday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland
Road, South Bend. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on
Sunday, Feb. 13, in the Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren,
53105 N. Ironwood Drive, Cleveland and Ironwood, South Bend. In
lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice,
Inc., of St. Joseph County or to the church. Eldred
