Sister M. Eutropia, CSC, 99, died on Saturday, Jan. 15, in Saint Mary's Convent, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind. Sister M. Eutropia (Margaret Mary Murray) was born on Nov. 19, 1900, to the late William and Catherine Parnell Murray in Gloster, Offaly, Ireland.
She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross at Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind., on June 15, 1920, from Offaly, Ireland, and made final profession in the Congregation on Aug. 15, 1926. Sister M. Eutropia is survived by nephews, Ian, Sean and Patrick Murray, all in Offaly, Ireland; and by a cousin, Elizabeth Doherty of Burnt Hills, NY.
Sister M. Eutropia spent most of her years in the teaching ministry in the west of the United States. She began in 1922 teaching elementary education at Saint Joseph's School, South Bend, and Saint Mary's School, Anderson, Ind. Along with her teaching duties, Sister became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1927. Sister moved west in 1932 and taught in Fresno, Beverly Hills, Ventura, Los Angeles and San Mateo, Calif., then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. She taught the middle grades in Modesto, Calif., was Coordinator of the Basic Skills Program in Seattle, Wash., and was a tutor at Saint Barnabas School, Long Beach, Calif., in 1980 - 1986. She became a resident at Saint Catherine's Convent, Ventura, 1986, where she did community service until 1993, when she moved to Saint Mary's Convent, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, and took part in the Apostolate of Prayer until her death.
Wake service will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's. Funeral Mass will be at at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 18, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, followed by interment at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
