Rev. Joseph F. Murphy

June 3, 1916-March 29, 1995

SOUTH BEND - Rev. Joseph F. Murphy, CSC, 78, of Holy Cross House, died Wednesday night in his residence. Father Murphy entered the novitiate of the Congregation of Holy Cross on Aug. 15, 1938, in Rolling Prairie. He made his perpetual profession on Aug. 16, 1949, at Notre Dame and was ordained a priest at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame. He served in hospital ministry at St. Joseph's Hospital and previously served in the Bengal Missions in India and from 1952 to 1971 at the parishes of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was pastor for 1961 to 1967, and at Holy Cross and Christ the King parishes, all in South Bend.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Basilica. Burial will be in Holy Cross Community Cemetery. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Friday in Moreau Seminary, where a wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. today in Moreau Seminary, where a wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Surviving are four sisters, Florence Metzger of Elkhart, Catherine Kallal of Greenville, Ill., Mary Murphy of St. Louis, Mo., and Mildred Duncan of San Marcos, Calif., and a brother, Jay of Alton, Ill.
