SOUTH BEND - John P. Murphy, 79, of Naples, Fla., formerly of South Bend, died Tuesday afternoon in his home after an illness. Mr. Murphy was a former teacher and football coach in New York, Chicago and at Auburn University for 29 years.
He was a former employee of South Bend Community School Corp. as a football coach at Adams High School. He coached on the college level for 20 years and was a former assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame. He was born June 3, 1915, in South Bend, and lived in Naples since 1977.
On Aug. 26, 1939, in South Bend, he married Odessa Johnston. She survives with two daughters, Sheila Cook of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Margaret Condon of Plymouth; a son, Dennis of San Diego; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Jane O'Donnell of South Bend. He was named Indiana High School Coach of the Year twice and was a member of the Notre Dame Monogram Club for 55 years. He was a graduate of Notre Dame and football player from 1935-37.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Basilica. Cremation has taken place with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
