OSCEOLA - Edward J. Murphy, 68, of 10155 Vistula Road, died at 2:16 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Medical Center, South Bend. Mr. Murphy retired in 1994 from the University of Notre Dame law school after 37 years of service as a professor of contract law and jurisprudence. He was born July 16, 1927, in Springfield, Ill., and lived in South Bend since 1957.
On June 19, 1954, in Springfield, he married Mary Ann Hansen. She survives with two daughters, Ann Manion and Mary Hamann, both of South Bend; seven sons, Martin J., John H., Patrick D., Michael J., and Stephen R., all of South Bend, James M. of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Thomas E. of Bristol; 22 grandchildren; his mother, Linda Murphy of Osceola; and a brother, Ronald of Springfield, Ill.
He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Mishawaka. Mr. Murphy was named the John N. Mathews Professor Law in 1979. He co-authored a law textbook, published numerous legal books and articles and also a religious textbook for high school students. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois and an Army veteran of World War II.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Mishawaka. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Warner Funeral Home, where the parish rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
