Rev. Michael A. Mulcaire CSC, 70,
former vice president of the University of Notre Dame, died
Thursday in Holy Cross House on the campus where he had been
living in retirement since 1957. Father Mulcaire a native of
Lemerick, Ireland, was vice president and chairman of the faculty
board in control of athletics from 1928 to 1933. A 1917 graduate
of Notre Dame, he received his doctorate degree in 1923 from the
Catholic University of America, Washington DC. He was a professor
of economics at Notre Dame from 1923 to 1928 and again after
World War II. From 1943 to 1945 he was professor of economics and
also vice president of the University of Portland in Oregon. He
was assistant chaplain of Columba Hall at Notre Dame from 1955 to
1957. Born Aug. 6, 1894 he began studies at Notre Dame in 1909,
entering the novitiate of the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1917
and making his final vows in 1922. He was ordained to the
priesthood June 16, 1922.
He is survived by four brothers, including Rev.
James Mulcaire CSC, pastor of St. Peters Catholic
Church in South Beloit, Ill.; and four sisters, including Sister
Maria Gemma CSC, of St. Mary of the Lake in Gary; Sister
Miriam Gertrude CSC of Holy Cross School in South Bend; Sister
Aloysia CSC, of St. Marys School in Anderson, Ind.
Friends may call at Corby Hall on the campus
after 1 p.m. Saturday. The office of the dead will be recited at
5 p.m. Sunday at Sacred Heart Church on the campus, and services
will be held there at 8:30 a.m. Monday, with burial in Community
Cemetery. His brother Rev. James Mulcaire CSC will officiate.
