Rev. Joseph A. Muckenthaler, CSC, professor of German and a member of the University of Notre Dame faculty for the last 25 years, died this morning in his room in Dillon Hall on the campus.
Father Mcukenthaler was born Aug. 14, 1898 in South Bend the son of Joseph and Emma (Dosmann) Muckenthaler, both deceased. He entered the Holy Cross Seminary in 1914 and made his final profession of vows to the congregation in 1923. In the same year he graduated from Notre Dame. He was ordained to the priesthood in Sacred Heart Church, Notre dame, June 24, 1927. From 1927 to 1931 he was a faculty member at the University of Portland, Portland, Ore., and since 1931 he taught at Notre Dame. He received a Masters degree in 1930 from Catholic University of America, Washington DC.
He is survived by two brothers, Raymond of South Bend and Leo, of Toledo, Ohio, and a sister Miss Florence Muckenthaler of South Bend.
Friends may call at Corby Hall Chapel after 1 p.m. Saturday. The office of the dead will chanted, at 5 p.m. Sunday in Sacred Heart Church, and funeral services will be in the church at 8:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will be at Community Cemetery on the campus.
Editor: He was Rector of Baldin Hall from 1932-1939, of Cavanaugh Hall from 1939 to 1944, and Prefect of Dillon Hall from 1944 until his death.
