SOUTH BEND - Henry Mostaert, 83, of South Bend, formerly
of Mishawaka, passed away in his home on Tuesday, May 8. Henry
was born on February 2, 1924, in Mishawaka, to Emiel P. and
Maggie (Veraet) Mostaert.
On October 10, 1949, he married the former Ann Van Den Berghe, who preceded him in death on September 12, 2002. Surviving Henry are his daughter, Lynn Mostaert of Osceola; two grandchildren, Marlena and Blair; a sister, Elsie Boenne of Mishawaka; and his dear friend, Louise Sibley.
Henry was very active in the community; he was on the Precinct Committee for eight years at the BK Club, was on the Penn Township Advisory Board for 12 years, and was treasurer of the Democratic Central Comm. for four years. He was secretary and a board member of the BK Club for six years, a lifetime member of VFW Post 360, was co-captain of the Mishawaka baseball team in 1943, an honorary member of the Home Builders Association, a past member of IHSAA, and refereed H.S. basketball. Henry was a United States Army veteran. He spent three years in the South Pacific during WW II, and he received the Purple Heart on Iwo Jima. He was active in fast-pitch baseball from 1949-1950. Henry was also a member of Penn High Building Trades and was chairman of Panorama of Homes in Blair Hills Mishawaka in 1977, and spent two years on the Mishawaka Redevelopment Commission.
Family and friends may visit on Thursday, May 10, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 11, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Bavo Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with Rev. Barry England officiating. Entombment will follow in Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum, Mishawaka. Military rites will be by VFW Post 360 and the American Legion 161 Burial Squad.
