Brother James Moroney, CSC, 73, died in his residence of natural causes following a long illness on Tuesday, March 28, in Riverside Place at the Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, Ind. Brother James was born to the late Alexander and Eula (McGuire) Moroney in Nokomis, Ill., one of four sons and six daughters, all but one preceding Br. James in death.

He was educated in schools in Illinois and served briefly in the Army before joining Holy Cross at Watertown, Wis., in September 1948. He received the habit of the Brothers of Holy Cross in February 1949, made his first vows a year later, and his perpetual vows in August 1953.

After completing undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame, Br. James taught at Holy Trinity High School, Chicago, St. Joseph High School, South Bend, Ind., Gilmour Academy, Gates Mills, Ohio, and for much of his teaching career, Holy Cross College, Notre Dame. He did graduate work in theology at St. John's University, New York. He was also involved in training candidates and young student brothers, as well as in province administration as a provincial councilor and as assistant provincial. Br. James was especially effective as a teacher and writer, having the capacity to simplify complex theological concepts and to challenge his students and readers on the deepest level of their spiritual growth.

Br. James fought the effects of diabetes, which a dozen years ago induced kidney failure. For a time he underwent regular dialysis until a kidney was available for transplant. He confronted both the implications and the limiting effects of his condition calmly and courageously at all times, never complaining, but always grateful for what he could still be and do.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, in St. Joseph Chapel at the Brothers' Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, 54515 State Road 933 N. A Mass of the Resurrection will follow, with burial immediately afterward in the St. Joseph's Cemetery on the village grounds. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
