SOUTH BEND - John Edward Monahan, 79, of Victory Avenue, died at 3:05 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Medical Center. Mr. Monahan retired as president and counsel for Abstract & Title Corp. for over 25 years. He was born May 21, 1916, in South Bend.

On May 28, 1949, in Minneapolis, he married Vera C. Gustafson. She survives with four sons, Michael T. of Granger, Thomas P. of Georgetown, Ind., William J. of South Bend, and Donald E. of Indianapolis; six grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Porowski of South Bend. He was a member of Elks Lodge 235, Notre Dame Alumni Association, former president of Indiana Land Title Association, a graduate of Central High School and University of Notre Dame Law School, was a eucharistic minister at St. Anthony DePadua Catholic Church, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road.
