William A. Mitchell, 71, of South Bend, Ind., passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 21, at his home in Clay Township. Mr. Mitchell was a native of South Bend, and at the time of his death was a retired business owner of W.J. Clancy Associates and remained as a consultant in that firm which he owned and operated for 30 years. After graduation from John Adams High School, class of 1948, Mr. Mitchell enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a member of the shore patrol of the naval police, and was an Engineman First Class on the U.S.S. Krishna, ARL 38. He was a Korean-era War veteran. Mr. Mitchell was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, receiving a B.A. degree in 1956. A year later, Mr. Mitchell earned an M.A. degree in sociology from the University of Notre Dame. While at Notre Dame,
Mr. Mitchell married the former Clara N. Ferraro, on Aug. 29, 1953, in South Bend, and the newlyweds lived on campus in Vetville. Mr. Mitchell served as editor of the Vetville Herald, a weekly newspaper. After finishing his education, Mr. Mitchell entered the corporate world. At Bendix Corporation, he served as director of personnel. He also was Director of Human Relations at the Motorola Corporation in Franklin Park, Ill. In 1973 he purchased Clancy Inventory Services, Inc., moving his family back to his hometown of South Bend.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his mother, Mrs. Margaret (Mitchell) Giantomaso. Along with his wife of 49 years, the former Clara Natalie Ferraro, he is survived by six children, William A. Mitchell III (Diane) of South Bend, Mary Mitchell-Dick (Richard) of Indianapolis, Ind., Kathleen Lathrop (Steven) of Haslett, Mich., Theresa Mitchell Barbo (Daniel) of Yarmouth Port, Mass., Michael Mitchell (Terry) of South Bend, and James Mitchell of South Bend; 11 grandchildren, William IV and Chelsea Mitchell, Aaron and Kristen Mitchell-Dick, Andrew and Jacob Lathrop, Katherine and Thomas Barbo, Brett, Natalie and Sarah Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his father, William Albert Mitchell Sr.; and by his two sisters, Mrs. Lucille (Mitchell) Baele and Mrs. Thelma (Mitchell) Dragovich, both of South Bend.
Friends may call today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the McGann Funeral Homes, University Area Chapel, 2313 E. Edison, at Ironwood, where the Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 p.m. The Rite of Christian Burial Mass will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Christ the King Catholic Church, SR 933 North at Darden Road.
