Betty A. Mitchell, 58, of Adams Road, South Bend, died Friday, November 3, 2000, at Healthwin Specialty Care Facility, South Bend, Ind., of Multiple Sclerosis. She was born November 30, 1941, in Niles, Mich., to Russell and Clara Clifton, both preceded her in death. She worked in the transportation department of the South Bend School Corporation until her retirement in 1997.

She was married to Dale L. Mitchell on October 17, 1959 in Portage Prairie Church, Niles. He survives along with a daughter, Kimberly (Joseph) Agostino of South Bend; a son, Timothy Mitchell of Staten Island, N.Y.; three sisters, Thelma Toakum of North Fort Myers, Fla., Leona (Edward) Proud of Dowagiac, Mich., and Kathleen (Henry) Camp of Cary, N.C.; three brothers, Russell B. (M.J.) Clifton of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Charles (Irene) Clifton of Niles, and Leon Clifton of Shelbyville, Tenn.; and by one grandson, Austin Agostino.

Betty was a past president of the American Business Women's Association, past president of the German Township Fire Department Auxiliary, German Township's 4-H Women's Leader, and was the coordinator for the 1987 Special Olympics at Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College in South Bend. She was a member of the Portage Prairie Methodist Church, Niles.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today, November 6, in Swem Funeral Home, 301 W. Front St., Buchanan, where friends called on Sunday, November 5 from 2 to 6 p.m. Burial will take place in the Portage Prairie Cemetery.
