Virginia L. Miller

NEW CARLISLE - Virginia L. Miller, 89, of New Carlisle, IN, passed away at 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2010, at Hamilton Communities in New Carlisle, IN. She was born on March 19, 1921, to the late Frank E. and Monica (Strantz) Miller in New Carlisle, IN, and was a lifelong resident. Along with her parents, one brother, Albert F. Miller, also preceded her in death. She is survived by two nieces, Chris M. Miller of Chicago, IL, and Peg A. Davidson of New Canaan, CT; two great-nieces, Gwen and Skyler Davidson, and great-nephew, Sean Davidson, all of New Canaan, CT; and her sister-in-law, Lillian Miller of New Carlisle, IN. Virginia attended Olive Township Public School #9 and graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1938. She was employed by Shell Oil and Sinclair Refinery (later Atlantic Richfield), and retired from Clyde E. Williams and Associates in 1984. Virginia's outside interests included a 15-year participation in the Fair Tax Association. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish and the church's Altar & Rosary Society. Her interest in apostolic work moved her to join the Legion of Mary in 1951. She was a member of St. Stanislaus "Over 50" Club, St. Adalbert's Harvest House and St. Hedwig's Golden Cluster. Besides interests in gardening and preserving food, Virginia also helped support a priest at Mary Knoll Order of Brothers and four children through the Christian Children's Fund. She also taught religion to high school juniors at St. Stanislaus for 17 years. Virginia's last project was researching and writing a book on Olive Township, its public schools and related items of interest. The proceeds from this book are to benefit the New Carlisle Historical Society. She spent over 10 years in its development. A memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 2010, in St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, 55756 Tulip Road, New Carlisle, IN. There will be no visitation. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend, IN, at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, 55756 Tulip Road, New Carlisle, IN 46552; or to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. Kaniewski Funeral Home, New Carlisle, IN, is handling arrangements.
