SOUTH BEND - John W. Miller, 70, of Johnson Road, South Bend, passed away at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, in his residence after an extended illness.
Mr. Miller was born on March 11, 1936, in South Bend, and resided in the Michiana area his entire lifetime.
On September 2, 1956, in Knox, Indiana, he married the former Carolyn O. Williams, who preceded him in death on March 3, 1990.
John is survived by three daughters, Mary Leann (Robin) Wood of South Bend, Cynthia Sue (Russell) Shank of South Bend and Rita Jane (Jim) Collins of Muskego, Wis.; a son, John J. Miller of South Bend; and by nine grandchildren whom he loved and cherished.
Mr. Miller retired in 1982 from the Department of Rural Manpower with the State of Indiana. He was also retired from farming.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, and a sister, Frances M. Gilmer.
Mr. Miller was a graduate of the class of 1955 from Lakeville High School. He loved woodworking, farming, and most of all spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren grow.
John will be sadly missed by his loving family and all who knew him during his life journey.

Visitation hours will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, May 12, in the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 13, and will be private. Pastor Don Carpenter will be officiating and burial will take place at Southlawn Cemetery.
The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and services and extend deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Miller family.
