Clement Michael Miller, 92, died
peacefully at home on the feast of the Holy Rosary, surrounded by
the love and prayers of family and friends. He is survived by 11
children, 44 grandchildren and 72 great-grandchildren. He was
born on a farm in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he attended a
one-room elementary schoolhouse. He was the third of Frank and
Margaret (Ruetz) Miller's five children. Upon the death of his
parents in early childhood he moved to South Bend and resided
with his aunt and uncle, Joseph and Leona Ruetz, and their
seven children.
On April 10, 1937, he married Mary Louise (Cressy)
Miller in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in South Bend. She
preceded him in death in 1997 after 60 years of marriage. Also
preceding him were his brothers, Msgr. Louis, Anthony and Hubert
Miller. He leaves behind his sister, Hattie (Sr. Virginis Miller,
OP). His children are Mike (Judy) Miller and Bev Bradley
of Mishawaka, Brian (Kathleen) Miller of South Bend, Mary Beth
(Leonard) Dominello of Granger, Hub (Kate) Miller of
Stillwater, N.Y., Wayne (Kathy) Miller of South Bend, Joyce
(Paul) Fuchs of Laurinburg, N.C., Ginni (Lou) Gionfriddo
of Vienna, Va., Vicki (Pat) Trimberger of Mishawaka, Greg
(Suzie) Miller of Mesa, Ariz., and Alicia (Terry) Cassell
of Annandale, Va.
Clem graduated in 1932 from Central High
School where he played trombone in the school band. He was part
of the Indiana State Championship football team that played in
the newly-built Notre Dame Rockne Stadium. The publication of his
personal, comprehensive scrapbook of Knute Rockne coincided with
the dedication of the stadium addition in the fall of 1997.
He began his business career with the Racine
Shirt Company, the present Stevenson Mills Apartment Building. He
became a real estate broker in 1953, and was associated with Sid
Cressy Realty and Whitcomb and Keller before joining Cressy &
Everett, where he later became a partner.
For 60 years Clem was a member of the Nocturnal Adoration
Society, spending an hour once a month in adoration before the
Blessed Sacrament. His creative Rosary-making was well-known. In
particular, his trademark "Blue & Gold" rosaries
have been treasured by countless people in the past eight years.
He was an active member of both Sacred Heart Parish and the
People of Praise Community in South Bend. The family is extremely
grateful for the loving support of friends, hospice and the
longtime care of Dr. Mark Walsh and his physician Dr. Richard
Wein.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today,
October 9, in the Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road,
where a Rosary prayer service will be said at 7 p.m. Mass of
Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Basilica of
the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame. Burial will follow at Cedar Grove
Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Queen of Peace
Ministries, to the People of Praise Action Division, or to the
Gloria Strauss Foundation.
