Arthur J. Michels, 901 E. LaSalle Ave., died at 7 p.m. Monday in his residence following an illness of 18 months with arteriosclerosis.
He was born in Mishawaka on June 11, 1873, and had lived in South Bend 50 years. In 1898 he married Ellen Mae Jakeway in Mishawaka. She died in 1947.
Mr. Michels graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1896 and was associated with the Indiana and Michigan Electric Co. until his retirement in 1940. He was an electrical engineer.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. D. D. Lynch of Chicago, Mrs. John T. Harrington of Washington, D. C., Mrs. Charles Armstrong, Mrs. Herbert P. Affelder, and Mrs. Lloyd Ek, all of South Bend. A son, Harold A., was killed during World War II in Germany. Other survivors are a brother, Albert of Mishawaka; a sister, Mrs. Fred Nester of South Bend, and eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Michels was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society of St. Josephs Church.

Funeral services for Arthur J. Michels, 901 E. La Salle Ave., who died Monday, will be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Josephs Catholic Church. Rev. Thomas F. Peyton, C.S.C., pastor, will officiate and burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
The rosary will be recited by members of the church and Knights of Columbus at 8 p.m. Thursday in the McGann Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Bernard and Louis Bickel, Robert Sullivan, Cyril Neiter and Jack and Cletus Michels.
Editor: The correct spelling of his sister is Mrs. Fred Nieter, and the pallbearer is Cyril Nieter.
