Evelyn Steele Metcalfe, 88, of 3602 S. Ironwood, South Bend, Ind., died at 1:10 p.m., Monday, at Memorial Hospital. She was born on July 24, 1908, in North Liberty, Ind. She graduated from South Bend High School in 1927, and from Epworth (Memorial) Hospital in 1930. She was on the Visiting Nurses staff from 1930 to 1933.

On May 6, 1933, she married Dr. Grant E. Metcalfe, who preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 1979.

A son, Grant E. Metcalfe Jr., also preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 1993. Mrs. Metcalfe was a member of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, Memorial Hospital Alumni Association, Auxiliary to the St. Joseph Medical Society, Schuyler Colfax Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Michigan City Yacht Club, University Club of Notre Dame, and the Humane Society of St. Joseph County.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, in the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive, South Bend. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, Madison Center, the Humane Society of St. Joseph County or to the donor's choice.
