SOUTH BEND - Bernard P. Merlander, 92, of South Bend, Ind., died at his home. A native of Chicago, Ill., he moved to South Bend in 1933. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 through 1944. He was the owner of the millinery department in Worth's until 1959, and was a real estate agent with the Portage Realty Company until 1985.
On June 10, 1949, he married the former Sema Sherman, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a brother and a sister. He is survived by seven nieces, four nephews, two godsons, 18 great-nieces and nephews, and many great-great-nieces and nephews. Mr. Merlander was an active member of The Hebrew Orthodox Congregation and was instrumental in their move from Taylor Street to High Street.
Memorial services were held in South Bend on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hebrew Orthodox Congregation.
