Sister Williamena Merkel CSC, 84, of Saint Mary’s Convent, died at 6:40 p.m. Friday in St. Joseph Hospital in South Bend, after a short illness. She was born May 1, 1887 in Chelsea, Mich. as Magdalena Merkel, and entered the congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross on Aug. 28, 1916. She was received as a novice on Aug. 6, 1916 and took her professional vows on Aug. 15, 1919. She came to St. Mary’s Convent in 1959, after assignments as a housekeeper in convents in Utah, California and Idaho.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Church of Our Loretto at St. Mary’s, with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery on the campus. A rosary will be recited in the St. Mary’s Convent parlor Sunday evening, where friends may call until the time of the services.
