Sister M. Rita Carmel CSC, 85, of Saint Mary’s Convent, died at 7 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Medical, South Bend, after a lengthy illness. She was born Mildred Carmel Meredith July 16, 1896 in Trenton, N.J, and had been a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross since 1916. She had been a teacher in Washington DC, New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania before coming to St. Mary’s Convent, where she was assistant superior from 1970 to 1977.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of Loretto Church with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery at St. Mary’s. Friends may call from Sunday until time of services.
