Jake Mendelovitz, 105, of Somerset
Drive, Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., formally of South Bend, Ind., died
on Sunday, Dec. 24, in the Vitas Hospice of University Hospital,
Tamarac, Fla. Jake was born in Czechoslovakia on June 9, 1895, to
the late Joseph and Rose (Rothstein). He was married in
Chicago, Ill., in 1917 to the former Helen Teichman, who
died in 1977. He was also preceded in death by a son, Marvin in
1996.
He is survived by a daughter, Bernice Leibow
of Lauderdale Lakes; three grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and by a
sister, Esther Wissbuch of Anaheim, Calif. Jake was the
former owner of a grocery store on Calvert Street, South Bend,
for many years. He was a lifetime member of Sinai Synagogue.
Funeral services and burial will be at 11
a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 28, in the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery,
Mishawaka, Ind. Rabbi Michael Freidland will officiate. There
will be no visitation. The Forest G. Hay Funeral Home is handling
arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Sinai fund
for the future.
