South Bend Tribune 6/13/1999
Edith McShann, 100, was born on March 28,
1899, in Albuquerque, N.M. Her mother died when she was a very
young child and she was raised by her Irish grandmother. She was
sent to a boarding school in the midwest as a young girl.
In 1917, in Fort Whatchuka, Ariz., she
married Amzie McShann, who preceded her in death in 1938. She
later moved to South Bend, Ind., coming from Billings, Mont. Her
old friend, John Charles, said that after becoming acquainted
with Edith and listening to her many stories, he found her to be
a person who enjoyed life and was very benevolent to her friends.
She arrived in South Bend somewhere around the `50s and attended
Grace A.M.E. Zion Church later in life.
Mrs. McShann often spoke of her extensive
travel throughout Canada, Mexico and the United States. In March
1999, a celebration of her 100 years of life was hosted by
several friends who had many fond memories of Edith. She will be
fondly remembered by her friends, John Charles Bryant, Sharon and
Daphne Vaughn, her caregiver and counselor, Linda Watkins; and by
many other friends.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on
Monday, followed by funeral services at 1 p.m. in the
Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
The Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home is entrusted with services.
