John A. McQuade, M.D., 68, of
Sandpiper Cove Run, South Bend, Ind., passed away after a 27-year
battle against heart disease at 4:35 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, in
Saint Mary's Hospital, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. He was born
on Sept. 4, 1933, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Joseph and
Florence McQuade of Terre Haute, Ind. On Dec. 1, 1962, in South
Bend, he married Marian Nemeth, who survives. He is also
survived by three daughters, Kathy (Haney) McQuade of South Bend,
Maureen (Hammer) McQuade of South Bend and Dr. Becky McQuade of
New Albany, Ohio; a son, Tim McQuade of Tampa, Fla.; and by six
grandchildren, Matt, Billy, Lauren, Allen, Emiljah and Kevin. He
has five siblings, Donald (deceased), Richard (Judy), Larry
(SuAnn), James and Patricia. Dr. McQuade graduated from Garfield
High School and Indiana State Teacher's College in Terre Haute.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was a
disabled American veteran. He then went on to the Indiana
University School of Medicine where he received his M.D. He was a
family practitioner in South Bend. He was a life member of the
Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association and
the Indiana State Medical Association. He dedicated his life to
serving his community including medical director of Healthwin
Hospital, the Center for the Homeless, the Women's Shelter, the
Leighton Center, and the Walnut Street Clinic for Migrant Farm
Workers (Indiana Health Center, Inc.)
Family and friends may call from noon to 4
p.m. on Sunday, April 28, in the Sandpiper Cove Clubhouse at the
corner of Darden and Lilac. Memorial contributions may be made to
the American Heart Association and Multiple Sclerosis Society, or
to the charity of your choice. The Welsheimer Funeral Home is
handling arrangements.
