Sarah McKinney, 77, of Regency Place,
South Bend, Ind., formerly of Fowler, Ind., died at 3:24 p.m. on
Sunday, July 25, in Hospice House, South Bend. She was born on
Nov. 17, 1921, in Benton County, to Samuel of County Armagh,
Northern Ireland, and Ida Elizabeth (Davidson) Hewitt. She
was graduated from Gilboa High School in 1939, and married Gene
W. McKinney in October, 1944, in Earl Park, Ind. Mr. McKinney
died in 1968.
Mr. and Mrs. McKinney owned and operated the
Earl Park Standard Oil Station for many years before moving to a
farm near Fowler. She was employed by the Free Grain Elevator and
later served as the head clerk at the state highway garage. Mrs.
McKinney was a member of the Earl Park-Fowler Chapter of Eastern
Star, and held the position of worthy matron in 1954. She was
also a member of the Earl Park Presbyterian Church. She was
active on local Republican committees and was a precinct
committeewoman for Parish Grove Township for many years. Besides
politics, Mrs. McKinney loved fishing in Minnesota, and was a
passionate indefatigable traveler.
Survivors include a son, David McKinney of
Kokomo; a daughter, Nancy Windler of South Bend; and two
grandchildren, Jamie and Melissa Windler of Minneapolis, Minn.
Also surviving are a brother, Richard Hewitt of Fowler; a sister,
Jenny Smith of Jamestown, N.D.; and numerous nieces and
nephews. Two brothers, Robert and David, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held on July 27, in
the Earl Park Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ruby Kleymann
officiating. Interment was at Fairlawn Cemetery, Kentland, Ind.
