Leo H. McCormick Jr. March 31, 1938 - Feb. 4, 2009
SOUTH BEND - Leo Hugh McCormick, Jr., 70, died February 4, 2009
at the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care after courageously
battling Multiple Myeloma cancer for two and a half years. He was
surrounded by his loving family. Leo was born March 31, 1938 in
Blaine , KS to Leo Hugh McCormick, Sr. and Margaret McCormick. He
is survived by his wife, Carole; daughter, Mari Chamberlin
(Paul); sons, Richard McCormick (Jodi) and David McCormick (
Tracy ); and seven grandchildren, all of South Bend . Also
surviving are sisters, Mary Farrell of Frankfort, KS, and Pat
Olson (Victor) of Manhattan, KS ; brothers, Tom McCormick (Jean)
of Berryton, KS, and James McCormick (Carol) of Blaine, KS; and
many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents
and a sister, Margaret Fudge (Charles) of San Diego, CA. Leo
graduated from Blaine High School; St. Benedict's College (B.S.
Mathematics); Kansas State University (B.S. Civil Engineering)
and Washburn University Law School (J.D.). He worked for the
Kansas Department of Engineering and after graduating from
Washburn University Law School in 1968, he worked as an examiner
for the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Washington ,
D.C. In 1969, he moved to South Bend to work for the Bendix
Corporation as a patent attorney in the Brakes and Steering
Divison. After retiring from Allied Signal/Honeywell he practiced
law in private practice, concentrating on intellectual property
law. He provided counsel to the Robert Bosch Corporation for the
last few years. Leo was a Usher Captain at Notre Dame football
games, Section 10, for over twenty years and he enjoyed nightly
visits to pray at the University of Notre Dame Grotto . He
enjoyed golfing and played on the Wednesday night Bendix Golf
League at Elbel for nearly thirty years. After being sidelined
for over two years, he was able to play one last round this past
fall. That was one of his goals after being diagnosed. He enjoyed
listening to classical music. He was a member of St. Joseph
Church Men's Cursillio group since 1972. He enjoyed the church
and meeting with this group. When his sons played baseball, Leo
volunteered hundreds of hours of service at the former Northside
Little League Leo never forgot his Kansas roots. He frequently
returned to visit his relatives and his homestead. A kind and
generous man, Leo brought joy to everyone he met. He loved his
family and cherished his grandchildren. He had enthusiasm for
life and made friends easily. Leo followed Jesus Christ's path;
he gave more than he received. He was loved by many and will be
deeply missed by his family, friends, nurses and doctors. So
blessed were we to know Leo. He was loved as a son, brother,
husband, father and grandfather. We thank God for his time on
earth. It is with sadness in our hearts that we say goodbye, but
joy knowing he is with our Dear Lord in Heaven, smiling down upon
us. Friends may call Hahn's funeral home, 505 W. 8th Street ,
Mishawaka , IN , today from 4-7 p.m. A mass in celebration of his
life will be held Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St.
Bavo's Catholic Church, 511 W. 7th Street , Mishawaka , IN.
Rosary will be said at 4:00 p.m. Leo's father preceded him in
death 27 years to the day. Leo will be buried next to his father
in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Blaine, KS, following a mass at St.
Columbekille's Catholic Church, Blaine, KS . In lieu of flowers,
the family requests donations be made to Indiana University -
Simon Cancer Center c/o I.U. Foundation, PO Box 660245,
Indianapolis, IN 46266. Please make gifts payable to I.U.
Foundation/Multiple Myeloma and indicate "In memory of Leo
Hugh McCormick" in the memo line. Leo requested that he be
remembered at memorial masses.
