  On Saturday, Jan. 30, at the residence of his brother-in-law, H.M. Crocket [Crockett], of Consumption, Benjamin F. McCartney.
  His funeral was attended by a large concourse of people, and was in charge of South Bend Lodge, No. 29, I.O.O.F., of which Order and Lodge he was a respected and valuable member.

[Benjamin is buried in City Cemetery, South Bend, Ind. The headstone reads: BENJAMIN F. M'CARTNEY died 01/31/1857 age: 34 years. About a year before his death he had purchased almost 3,000 acres of land in Hardin & Marshall counties, Iowa. There is no indication that he ever married. He was born abt 1823, in Ohio or Indiana to William C & Margery McCartney. His sister Gabrilla A McCartney was married to Harrison Marion Crockett, of South Bend.]
