Thomas E. McCarthy, 57, of 633 E. Angela Blvd., South Bend insurance executive, died at 4:40a.m. Sunday in the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Chicago. He had been ill for five months.
He was the owner of the McCarthy Insurance Agency, located in the Marycrest Bldg., South Bends general agency for Hartford Life Insurance. He had been in the insurance business since 1928 coming from Chicago in 1942 to organize the general agency here.
At the time of his death, he was treasurer of the General Agents Assn. He had served as a deputy grand knight of Knights of Columbus Council 553 here and was a member of the Indiana Club. He had attended Loyola University in Chicago.
He married Christine OConnor, who survives with a son Edward T., of South Bend; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Patricia Guion of Evanston, Ill.; and Mrs. Eileen McKoen of Clevelandd, Ohio; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth McCarthy of Chicago; three brothers, John McCarthy of Barington, Illl. and Edward McCarthy and Dr. Martin McCarthy, both of Chicago; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Rev. Harold W. Riley, CSC, pastor will officiate.
Active pallbearers John J. Sheehan Jr., William J. Sheehan, Robert P. Sheehan, Thomas J. McCarthy and John N. McCarthy, all of Chicago, and Thomas L. Hickey of South Bend, Honorary pallbearers will be Herbert E. Jones and William D. Abolt both of South Bend, William F. Brennan of River Forest, Ill., Emiel DeHann and Mark J. Sheehan, both of Chicago, and Joseph A. Kelly of Beverly, Mass.
Friends may call after 7 p.m. today in the Hickey Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
