Brother Gerontius McCarthy CSC, 50,
former master of novices at St. Joseph Novitiate, Rolling
Prairie, died Tuesday night after suffering a heart attack at
Gilmour Academy, Gates Mills, Ohio. Born Joseph T. McCarthy on
April 9, 1920 at Newport, R. I., he received the habit of the
Brothers of Holy Cross in 1939, and made his final vows in the
religious community on Aug. 16, 1943. He received his bachelors
degree in 1444, and his masters degree in 1949, both from
the University of Notre Dame.
His first teaching assignment was at
Catholic Central High School, Monroe, Mich., where in 1951 he was
appointed principal. In 1953 he became the assistant master of
novices at St. Joseph Novitiate, then master of novices in 1955.
In 1964 he again was appointed principal at the Monroe High
School. In 1968 he was appointed to Gilmour Academy. He is
survived by a sister, Mrs. Katherine Juaire, and a
brother, John, both of Newport.
Friends may call at the Holy Cross Brothers
Center after 1 p.m. Friday. Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday
in the chapel at the Brothers Center. Burial will be in St.
Joseph Cemetery, Notre Dame.
