Rev. William J. McAuliffe CSC, 71, of
Holy Cross, former pastor of Sacred Heart Church at the
University of Notre Dame, died early Wednesday in Holy Cross
House after and illness. He was born March 20, 1915 in Bellows
Falis, Vt. He made his first vows in the Congregation of Holy
Cross on Jan. 2, 1933. After graduating from the University of
Notre Dame, he did graduate work at Holy Cross College,
Washington DC, and was ordained to the priesthood June 15, 1941.
He studied for his masters degree in history at Catholic
University in Washington DC and then taught at Notre Dame. From
1943 to 1946 he taught at Our Lady of Holy Cross Seminary, North
Easton, Mass.; from 1946 to 1948 he was a student and chaplain at
Pius X School of Liturgical Music, Manhattanville College, New
York; he spent 12 years at Notre Dame in various roles; from 1960
to 1962 he was pastor of Sacred Heart Church; and from 1962 to
1985 he was director of province development for the Holy Cross
Fathers.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in
Sacred Heart Church with burial in Holy Cross Community Cemetery,
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday when a wake service will be
at 7:30 p.m.
