Following a 10 a.m. visitation, funeral
services for Harold Mayes will be conducted at 11 a.m. on
Saturday, Sept. 11, in St. Paul Bethel Baptist Church, with
interment following at Riverview Ceme-tery. Mr. Harold Eugene
Mayes, 65, was called to rest at 8:30 p.m. on the evening of
Sunday, Sept. 5, in the Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation
Center. He was born an only child in Mounds City, Ill., to
William and Araena Mayes. His father, William, preceded him in
death. The Cobb Funeral Home, 3525 S. Michigan Street, South
Bend, has been entrusted with arrangements.
Harold moved to South Bend as a youth and,
upon graduation from Central High School, he joined the U.S. Army
on May 21, 1957. An honorably discharged veteran, he returned to
South Bend and had most recently been an employee of the Clark
Equipment Company for 18 years, until his retirement. He was a
member of St. Paul Bethel Baptist Church where he was baptized on
Jan. 5, 1992, and had given his life to his Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ. Harold was a very loving and caring husband,
father, son and a friend to many. If you were in need of someone
to talk to, Harold would always be there, willing to lend an ear.
Those left to cherish his memory are his
wife, Bessie (Holt); mother, Araena Mayes of South Bend;
daughter, Monica Mayes Parker of Atlanta, Ga.; son, Jessie
Mayes of South Bend; two stepdaughters, Thelma Williams of
Los Angeles, Calif., and Addie Morris of South Bend; two
stepsons, Melvin Lawrence of Atlanta and Bobby Lawrence of
Bossier City, La.; a half sister, Judy Perry of South
Bend; and a host of other family members and friends. Harold
Eugene Mayes will be missed by many.
