Leonard W. "Bill" Maxwell,
89, of West Angela Boulevard, South Bend, Ind., passed away at
4:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 15, in the Hospice House, South Bend.
He was born on Sept. 30, 1911, in Equal-ity, Ill., to the late
Mae and William Maxwell Sr. Leonard was also preceded in death by
three brothers, Noel, Glenn and Paul Maxwell; and by two sisters,
Thelma Grimes and Leah Areta. He was a member of
Moose Lodge #58, South Bend, Eagles Lodge #435, South Bend,
Masonic Lodge #45, Shrine Club, Scottish Rite Valley of South
Bend, Avalon Grotto, South Bend, and the Orak Temple of Michigan
City. Leonard was also a Kentucky Colonel. Leonard married Ruth
Wilborn Holloway on Aug. 4, 1956. He was employed by John Hancock
for 37 years and retired in 1974. He is survived by his wife,
Ruth Maxwell of South Bend; a daughter, Judy (Larry) Mitchell
of South Bend; two grandsons, Brian Schnakenberg of South
Bend and Adam Schnakenberg of Chicago, Ill.; several nieces and
nephews, and several great-nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday,
April 19, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street,
South Bend, with Rev. Mary Hubbard officiating. Friends may call
from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday in the funeral home
where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Entombment will be
at Riverview Mausoleum, South Bend. The family request that
memorial contributions be made to the Hospice of St. Joseph
County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437; or to
the American Heart Association, Midwest Affiliate, Memorial &
