David Lee Maurer

SOUTH BEND - David Lee Maurer, 62, a former South Bend
resident, died May 1st, 2008, at his home in Seminole, Florida. A
service will be held today, May 7th, at Rhodes Funeral Home in
Clearwater, Florida. David was born 15 September 1945 in South
Bend, Indiana, to Everett and Hesther Maurer. David attended Clay
High School before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served
in the U.S. Marine Corps from 14 December 1965 to 13 December
1968. He was an infantryman with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion 8th
Marines and spent two years, two months and 18 days in Vietnam.
After his honorable discharge, David became
a police officer with the St. Joseph County Police Department and
served 20 years, retiring as a detective in 1989. David moved to
Clearwater, Florida, and began a second career with Raytheon
Corporation working in the communications security department.
David retired from Raytheon in 2007 after 18 years. David's
friends and family remember him as a storyteller with wit and
humor who captured everyone's attention. David was passionate
about his children and always eager to share how proud he was of
them. David is survived by his three children: son and
daughter-in-law, Brian and Kim Maurer of San Diego, CA; son and
daughter-in-law, Shawn and Nicole Maurer of Austin, TX; and Lori
Maurer of Huntington Beach, CA. David is also survived by a
brother, Roland Maurer of South Bend; a brother, Irvin Maurer of
Linton; a sister, Phyllis McCormick of Surprise, Arizona;
and a sister, Hazel Fern. David will be missed by those
whose lives he touched.
