Rene A. Matthys, 90, of Pine Road, in
South Bend, Ind., formerly of Crumstown Highway, was called by
God from his residence to his final home at 11:15 p.m. Monday,
June 28. He was born on Dec. 26, 1913, to the late Henry and
Marie (Roedsens) Matthys in South Bend, and was a lifelong
resident.
Mr. Matthys was a self-employed bulk milk
hauler and a farmer. On Nov. 21, 1944, he married Martha E. Taelman
in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, South Bend. She died on Feb. 19,
1997. He is survived by one son, Jack K. (Janet) Matthys of South
Bend; four grandchildren, Renee (Carsten) Schmidt of South
Bend, Shelly Matthys of Granger, Ind., Russ (Peg) Matthys of
Granger, Ind., Kurtt (Lara) Matthys of North Liberty, Ind.; and
by a sister, Martha E. VanOverberghe of South Bend. Mr.
Matthys was a member of Holy Family Parish and an Army veteran of
World War II.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 2, in the Holy Family Catholic Church, with Rev. Christopher Young officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, where military services will be conducted by Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 360 and American Legion Post 161, both of Mishawaka, Ind. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today, July 1, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to the Holy Cross Care and Rehabilitation Center, 17475 Dugdale Drive, South Bend, IN 46635-1545.
