Jack Arthur Mathews was born June 4,
1925, to John and Rachel Mathews. He was a lifelong resident of
South Bend, Ind. Jack married Phyllis Ann Eggert in
January of 1951, who survives along with two sons, Kent and Tim,
five grandchildren and a brother, Joseph.
Jack was a World War II vet involved in the
central European campaigns. Jack received the American Theater
Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, the
European African Middle Eastern Medal and a Bronze Star for his
efforts supporting his country. Jack was a demolitions expert
with the rank of Master Sergeant upon his honorable discharge.
Jack attended and graduated from Purdue
University with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering.
He first put that education to use at the Bendix Corporation,
Missile Division, in Mishawaka, Ind., from 1950 thru 1978. He
spent the last 12 years at Bendix as plant manager. He then
joined Clark Equipment in Buchanan, Mich., as facilities manager
from 1978 to 1984. In 1984, Jack was appointed South Bend
Building Commissioner and served in that capacity until 1990.
Jack was an avid baseball fan and spent
countless hours researching Indiana-born major leaguers. As a
result of his work, many articles regarding this topic have been
published.
Jack had requested that upon his death he be
cremated with no service. The family is observing those wishes.
Please take a moment to remember Jack in your own way. We will
miss him. Memorial contributions may be made to the American
Cancer Society.
