OSCEOLA - Charles E. Matherly, 85, of Osceola, Indiana,
passed away at Holy Cross Hospital in Chicago, Illinois,
following an extended illness. Charles was born September 20,
1922, to the late Percy and Verta (Dishman) Matherly in
Butler, Tennessee. On August 21, 1943, Charles married the former
Hazel Robinson. They were married 54 years prior to her
passing in 1997. Surviving are his children, Ben Matherly of
Mishawaka, Indiana, Betty L. (Wayne) Cobb of Elkhart,
Indiana, Bonnie A. (Greg) Bemis of Osceola and Beverly J. Ward
of Elkhart, Indiana. Also surviving are his brother, Percy
(Pearl) Matherly Jr. of Butler, Tennessee; 11 grandchildren,
Cindy, Vince, Jesse, Matt, Josh, Mike, Rachel, Bob, Amanda, Kasey
and Charley; as well as three great-grandchildren, Mackala, Mike
and Taylor. Preceding Charles in death were his sons, Robert in
1955, and Bernard in 1996; along with a son-in-law, Richard Ward;
as well as his siblings, Bill, C.J. and Leland Matherly, Eula Scofield
and Avanell Shupe.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.
Tuesday, July 22, 2008, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola,
Indiana. Services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July
23, 2008, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, with interment to follow
at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Charles served his country in
the U.S. Army during the WW II era and was honorably discharged.
He was employed for 33 years as a millwright with the Uniroyal
Corporation of Mishawaka before his retirement in 1986. In his
spare time Charles enjoyed gardening, attending auctions, and
music, as well as running the "C and H Hobby Shop" in
Osceola with his wife, Hazel. Charles was also a member of
American Legion Post 308 of Osceola
