Michael Matern, 730 East Pennsylvania
avenue, died at 10:40 p.m. Thursday in the Dor-A-Lin nursing home
after a five-year illness. Born in Austria-Hungary Oct. 10, 1868,
he came to South Bend 45 years ago from Goshen, Ind. He married
Elfrieda Sholz July 16, 1888 in Corinth-Palmer, N.Y. She
survives with a son, Alfred B., and a daughter, Mrs. Rosina Hubbard,
both of South Bend, and a grandson. Also surviving are a brother,
John of Racine, Wis., and two sisters, Mrs. Rosina Melter,
of Racine, and Mrs. Barbara Werling of Goshen, Ind.
Friends may call in the Forest G. Hay funeral home where the
funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Walter D. Overholtzer
of Holy Trinity Evangelical Luthern church officiating. Interment
will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial park.
