SOUTH BEND - Marion Short Mappes, 81, of South Bend, IN, passed
away October 5, 2009. Born November 16, 1927, in Auburn, NY, she
was the daughter of the late Harold and Marion Short. Marion was
an active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was
involved in many women's groups through the church. She was also
a member of the Republican Women's Association and held several
offices through that organization. She was a librarian at Auburn
High School, as well as an avid reader. On November 14, 1953,
Marion married Leon Mappes, who preceded her in death. They had
three children who survive, John Mappes of Elkhart, Margaret
(Ron) Sevison of Niles, MI, and Kenneth (Sue) Mappes of Arcadia,
FL; six grandchildren, Alex Mappes of Memphis, TN, Renee Mappes
of Franklin, TN, Robert Sevison and Brian Sevison of Niles,
Jacqueline Mappes of Sarasota, FL, and Matthew Mappes of Arcadia,
FL. Also surviving are siblings, Elenore S. Norden, Harold L.
Short and June E. Peterson. A memorial service will be held on
Saturday, October 24, 2009, at 2:00 PM in Westminster
Presbyterian Church, 1501 W. Cleveland Road. Officiating will be
Rev. Don Neely. Visitation with the family will be a half-hour
before the service, and following the service in the fellowship
hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to
Westminster Presbyterian Church or to the charity of the donor's
