SOUTH BEND - Thomas R. (Manuszak) Manak, died December 25, 2008,
in his home after an extensive illness. He was born in South
Bend, In, to Walter and Catherine Manuszak, and besides his
parents was preceded in death by his brothers, John of South
Bend, Richard of Goleta, CA, Walter of Lebanon, PA, and his
sister, Marge of Santa Barbara, CA. Tom graduated from
Central High School in 1941 after considerable success in
football, including being names All State. He was then recruited
by Frank Leahy to play on Leahy's first freshman team at Notre
Dame. His college years were interrupted by World War II, and he
served as a Second Lieutenant and Finance Officer at Third Army
Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. While on leave in
South Bend, in 1945, he married the former Marjorie Meuleman, who
died in 1977. She was the mother of his three children. Upon his
discharge form the Army, Tom returned to Notre Dame. He chose to
concentrate on his studies and completion of his degree rather
than returning to football. He graduated from Notre Dame with a
degree in business in 1948. After a short employment with the
former H.D. Lee Company, he went to work in real estate and
right-of-way for Indiana & Michigan Power Company, from which
he retired in 1985, after 36 years. In 1980 he married the
former Edith Veltri, who survives. He is also survived by his
sons, James of Indianapolis, William of Sacramento, CA, and his
daughter, Sue Ann Leboza of Green Oaks, IL, as well as
grandchildren, Whitney Sullender of Indianapolis, Matthew and
Marisa Manak of California and Ben, Zachary and Abigail Leboza of
Green Oaks, IL. Also surviving are his brother, George of Goleta,
California, and many nieces and nephews. Tom was a member
of Sacred Heart Parish at Notre Dame, and the retirees Club of
I&M. He enjoyed travel, and was pleased to revisit many of
the areas in Europe familiar from his time in the Army. He
faithfully followed Notre Dame football. He especially enjoyed
his weekly meeting with the little select group of
"experts" who met on Monday to critique the games.
Cremation will be handled by McGann-Hay Funeral Home.
Visitation will be in the McGann-Hay-Granger Chapel, 13260 S.R.
23 at Cherry Road from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, with
