ELKHART - William Edgar Willie
Magyar, 72, 51710 Downey St., died at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday at
the home of his caregiver, Carol Magyar OConners. He was
born July 15, 1934, in South Bend, to Nicholas and Faye (Boatman)
Magyar. He married Valerie J. Schrader July 2, 1971, in
Langdon, N.D. She died in November 2004. He served 23 years in
the military, starting in 1953 with the Navy. He served aboard
the USS Des Moines during the Korean War. In 1957, he joined the
Army 101st Airborne. He completed Ranger school and Special
Forces training and served three tours of duty in Vietnam as a
Green Beret. He received several decorations, including a Purple
Heart and a Bronze Star. He retired in 1973 and went on to work
as a telephone lineman in the Langdon, N.D. area. He was a member
of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion in
Langdon. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming. Surviving are
three sons, Jeff (Beth) Magyar, Bristol, Tony (Marla) Magyar,
Elkhart, and Mike (Barb) Magyar, Fayetteville, N.C.; a daughter,
Stephanie (David) Ouse, Indianapolis; nine brothers, Joe
(Sharon) Magyar, Raliegh, N.C., Jim (Dolly) Magyar, Bristol, John
(Judy) Magyar, Alex (Carol) Magyar, Steve (Tracy) Magyar, Garland
Pete Magyar and Mike (Sandy) Magyar, all of Elkhart,
Jack Magyar, South Bend, and Fred (Joan) Magyar, Wakarusa; two
sisters, Joan Anderson, South Bend, and Mary Ellen Grove, Elkhart;
12 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in
death by a son, Robbie Magyar; a sister, Lois Toth; and a
granddaughter, Megan Magyar.
Local visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Billings Funeral Home, Elkhart. A funeral service and burial will be held in Langdon, N.D. Monday.
