SOUTH BEND - Barbara (Southard) Cole Madden, 80, of Wilmot, N.H., formerly of South Bend, died Wednesday in New London (N.H.) Hospital after an illness. Mrs. Madden was born June 17, 1915, in Chicago.
As Barbara Southard Cole, she married John C. Madden of Wilmot. He survives with two daughters, Candace Cole Leonard of Columbus, Ind., and Penelope Anne Cole of South Bend; a son, Charles H. of Philomath, Ore.; a stepdaughter, Margaret Eaton of Wilmot; a stepson, John C. Madden Jr. of Weston, Mass.; four grandchildren; four step-grandsons; and a sister, Lilla Jean Elbel of South Bend.
She was a graduate of Wells College, Aurora, N.Y., and a former volunteer chairwoman and executive director of the St. Joseph County Chapter of the American Red Cross, former president of Junior League, a former member of Visiting Nurses Association, and former volunteer for the Mental Health Association, South Bend.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New London. Burial will be at a later date at Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. Welsheimer Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Visiting Nurses Association, South Bend, or American Red Cross, South Bend.
