Mary “Mitzi” Madar  (August 2, 1914 – July 21, 2008).

SOUTH BEND – Mary “Mitzi” Madar, 93 of the Sanctuary at Holy Cross, passed away at 6:00pm Monday, July 21, 2008.

Mary was born on August 2, 1914 in South Bend to John and Rosa Scheu, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded by her husband, Frank Madar, in 1988, a daughter Maureen Vargo in 2005, a grandson Mike Vargo in 2006, and three brothers August Scheu, John Scheu ,and Frank Scheu.

Survivors include a daughter Roseann Smorse and son-in-law Mike Vargo; 5 grandchildren Mary (John) Leemreis, Amanda (Steve) Church, Edith (Raymond) Leemreis, Frank Vargo, and Joanne (Gary) Vida; 8 great-grandchildren Joe, Ashley, David, Baily, Hannah, Nathan, Nick, and Natalie; a sister Christine Biesbrouck of Michigan and sisters-in-law Helen Porogi and Carmella Madar both of South Bend.

It was Mitzi’s request that she be cremated. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am Friday, July 25, 2008 in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church where she was a long time member. Father Lawrence Teteh C.S.S.P., Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Family and friends may call 1 hour prior to services in the church. Zahoran Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady of Hungary Church or to the Our Lady of Hungary School Scholarship Fund.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff at the Sanctuary of Holy Cross.
