Gladys MacLean
July 16, 1911 - April 15, 2002
Gladys (Wilkie) MacLean, 90, wife of the late John Allan MacLean, both longtime residents of South Bend, Ind., died Monday, April 15, at St. Luke's Hospital in Tryon, N.C.
Born in Hickory, N.C., on July 16, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Jones Benjamin Wilkie and Lucy Satterwhite Wilkie. She met her future husband while they were both in junior high school; they were married July 4, 1931.
Mrs. MacLean was a member of the founding committee of the South Bend Art Chapter, was a member and one-time president of the South Bend chapter of Planned Parenthood, was a longtime member of the Women's Board of Memorial Hospital in South Bend, and was a longtime member of the Women's Advisory Council of Notre Dame University. She also served as a board member of the South Bend Symphony. In 2000 she was cited as one of the 20 women who had contributed most to South Bend in the preceding 20 years. In 1994 Mrs. MacLean moved to the Tryon Estates retirement community in Columbus, N.C., where she remained until her final illness.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Ray Mattson of Greenville, S.C., and Ann and Kent Massie of Lexington, Va.; and by three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral services will take place in the chapel of the First Presbyterian Church, South Bend, at 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, with private committal to follow at Riverview.
