May 22, 1945
James N. Luther, Sr., age 74, of 915 East Colfax Avenue, for many hears
active in city and county Republican affairs, died at 9: 30 o'clock Monday
night in St. Joseph's hospital, backspace.  The immediate cause of death was
a blood clots.  Indirectly it was the result of a fall in his home on May 10
in which he suffered a fractured hip.  He was removed to the hospital
immediately but because of his frailty it was impossible to set the bone.
Several days later he was stricken with pneumonia.  He was believed to be
recovering from that when death occurred suddenly.  Mr. Luther was a native
of South Bend.  He was born on the east side October 21, 1870.  He lived his
entire life within a few blocks of his birthplace.  Mr. Luther was
superintendent of the city waterworks from 1918 to 1922.  At the time of his
death he was the Republican member of the St. Joseph County alcoholic
beverage commission.  From 1900 to 1919 he was engaged in the dairy business
and later was employed by the Independent Tank line in Mishawaka.  He
retired from active business in 1932.  Mr. Luther is survived by his wife,
the former Cecilia Kintz, of South Bend.  They were married in Sacred Heart
Church, Notre Dame, November 15, 1893.  Their golden wedding anniversary was
celebrated in 1943 with a special mass in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church
  Celebrants of the mass was their son, Rev. Joseph A. Luther, S. J.,
assistant pastor of the St. Joseph's Cathedral, San Diego, CA.
Two Nuns in the Family. -- other survivors besides Father Luther are three
daughters, three sons and two sisters.  The sons and daughters are Sister M.
Anne Cecile, C. S. C., and Sister M. Cecile Marie, C. S. C., both of St.
Mary's convent; Mrs. William F. Roemer, 422 East Angela Boulevard; Edmund J.
Luther, 1531 East La Salle Avenue; Maurice P. Luther, of Detroit, MI, and
James M. Luther, Jr., at home.  Surviving sisters are Mrs. William
Braunsdorf, 833 East Minor Street, and Mrs. Burt Curtin, 826 East Sorin
Street.  Ten grandchildren also survived.  Mr. Luther was a member of St.
Joseph's Church and a former president of the Holy Name society.  He also
was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.  The body will lie in state
in the McGann funeral home from 2 PM Wednesday until the hour of the funeral
which is indefinite pending word of the arrival of Father Luther from the
West Coast.

 

May 23, 1945.
Funeral services for James N. Luther, Sr., of 915 East Colfax Avenue, will
be conducted at 9 AM Friday in the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church.  The
son, Rev. Joseph A. Luther, S. J., assistant pastor, of St. Joseph's
Cathedral, San Diego, CA, will sing the mass.  Pallbearers will be from the
Holy Name society of the Church, of which Mr. Luther was a past president.
Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
