April 3, 1908 - Dec. 12, 1998

South Bend Tribune 12/18/1998

April 3, 1908, was the day that God allowed Hollis A. Lowery to be born to Viola and Jasper Lowery in the community of Sardis, Tenn. Hollis was the third child born to the Lowerys, and had the distinction of being the first male child in the family. At a young age his family relocated to Mounds, Ill. While living in Illinois he met and married Lucille Bachelor, who preceded him in death on Dec. 21, 1974. Hollis later moved his family to South Bend, Ind., in 1943, and he soon became a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church. He was an active member of the Brotherhood, Senior Usher Board, Church Sunday School, and one of his greatest joys was serving as a deacon of the Pilgrim Baptist Church. He was elected treasurer of the Church Building Fund Committee under the pastorate of Rev. Charles G. Rowlett, serving in this position for 20 years. He was later appointed chairman of said committee under the pastorate of Rev. H. Gregory Haygood.

The family and loved ones of Hollis A. Lowery will always cherish his memory: niece/daughter, Sandra (Earl) Thompson of Gahanna, Ohio; three grandchildren, Kenneth Jones of Marion, Ohio, Kevin Jones of Columbus, Ohio, and Yvonne (Andrew E.) Kelley of Hilliard, Ohio; two great-grandchildren, Andrew M. Kelley and Myiah Kelley of Hilliard, Ohio; three sisters, Leola Earley and Georgia Kennedy of South Bend, and Ophine Buford of Denver, Colo.; two brothers, Aaron (Essie) Lowery of South Bend and Clarence Lowery of Moline, Ill. He also leaves a host of nieces and nephews to cherish his memory from Illinois, Indiana, Georgia, Colorado, Maryland, California, Washington, D.C., and Michigan. Hollis was blessed to have as his close and dearest friends, Mary Perkins of South Bend and Mitchell Cole of South Bend.

God granted Hollis 90 years of life on earth. He was called home to be with the Lord at 12:55 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Pilgrim Baptist Church. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the church. Clark's Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
