Gary A. Lobeck

Gary A. Lobeck, 53, of Painted Ridge Trail, Granger, Ind., passed away after he battled lung cancer courageously for a year and a half on Saturday, March 11, in his home. Mr. Lobeck was born on Nov. 19, 1946 in South Bend, Ind. to Paul A. and Mary Ellen Lobeck. His father Paul preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 1993. He was also preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Margaret Horvath on April 3, 1995. Mr. Lobeck retired from Ameritech on Oct. 1, 1999, after almost 30 years of service.

 

On April 5, 1975, he married Christine Horvath who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Erika Rose Lobeck of Granger and Sara Lynn Lobeck of Mishawaka, Ind.; his mother, Mary Ellen; nieces, Tara Dill, Stephanie Horvath and Stacey Horvath; father-in-law, Louis Horvath of South Bend; brother-in-law, John (Susan) Horvath of South Bend; cousins, David (Diana) Mitchell of Nashville, Tenn.; and by several other aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

Mr. Lobeck was a 1965 Central High School graduate, member of the South Bend Turners and the Michiana Steelheaders Club. In January 1964 he enlisted in the US Navy reserves at age 17, where he took boot camp training at Great Lakes. He was assigned to class A radio school in Bainbridge, Md., in July 1965, where he graduated second in his class of 70, in January 1966, after which he was assigned to the USS Annapolis, a major communications relay ship in the 7th fleet, serving off the coast of Viet Nam. He was promoted to the rank of radioman 3rd class in October 1966 and served in the South China Sea from February 1966 to February 1967. From there he reported to the USS Cavalier at San Diego, Calif., until October 1967 and was released to inactive duty on July 18, 1968.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14, in the First Presbyterian Church, South Bend with Rev. David Morrow officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call a half hour prior to services in the church on Tuesday and from 4 to 8 p.m. today, March 13 in the KANIEWSKI Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend.
